DDD 2021: Victor Hugo Pontes - Os Três Irmãos
José Caldeira

Os Três Irmãos, the new creation of the choreographer Victor Hugo Pontes, premieres today at Teatro Viriato, in Viseu: it is the first date of a tour that will arrive at DDD - Festival Dias da Dança, in April 2021, presented within + Week (co-organized with FITEI).

This time, the choreographer, for whom the words end up "almost always" taken "from the mouths of the performers or silencing the authors", embarked on a different process. In Os Três Irmãos,the words are present from the very beginning, born from a challenge set to the writer Gonçalo M. Tavares to write about "family matters".

The project has also started from the choreographer's will to work with a small cast, after several experiences with casts of more than 10 performers. Abelard, Adler and Hadrian are Os Três Irmãos, embodied by the dancers Dinis Duarte, Paulo Mota and Valter Fernandes. The three seek the trail of their parents, they mark their absence with chalk, wash themselves, eat together at the table, carry each other's bodies in a ritualized sacrifice, live on the run, practicing the dangerous game of meeting the past.

Throughout the creative process, it was quickly concluded "that action would be on this present full of absence. For instance, the absence of people who have died in the meantime and to whom we couldn’t say goodbye. My will wasn’t to portray this reality-fiction that we live in and perhaps that is whyI preferred to stay in some way in the past, when contact and touch were still possible for us. It is also from this past that Os Três Irmãos speaks to us. We are now living in an anomaly and not in a new normality and family is the safest and most fragile thing we have", explains Victor Hugo Pontes.

Os Três Irmãos is a coproduction that brings together the company Nome Próprio and five national facilities: Casa das Artes de Vila Nova de Famalicão, Cine-Teatro Louletano, São Luiz Teatro Municipal, Teatro Viriato and Teatro Municipal do Porto / DDD - Festival Dias da Dança.
