In L’affadissement du merveilleux, Catherine Gaudet operates a depuration of her language, until now rather theatrical, via a system of choreographic cycles created out of the circle’s universal structure.
On an empty white stage, five dancers move in unison, a few inches away from one another and in repetitive motifs, in lines or in circles, or else individualising themselves in seductive poses or challenging solos. Raw, precise physicality mingles with dramatic tension and grotesqueness.
The exactitude and sensuality of L’affadissement du merveilleux are driven by hypnotic rhythms that punctuate the dancers’ constant pauses, from serenity to a scream, from violence to catharsis, in an intense, ritualised meditation on the human condition.
